The Story of Persian Music
Documents and treasures as old as pre-history show an elaborate musical culture in Iran. In particular, Sassanid period (226-651 AD) has left us traces of a vibrant musical life and striking musicians. After the arrival of Islam in Iran, figures like the well-known Avicenna continued to contribute to Persian music. During a long period of degeneration, folk songs and ancient Persian classical music were preserved and handed down orally from generation to generation. It was not until the 20th century that Persian music was brought to a regeneration.
The Genres of Iranian Music
Iranian Traditional Music
Traditional music of Iran, or the classical music of Iran, is a musical tradition developed throughout the country’s classical, medieval, and contemporary eras. As a spiritual tool, and less functioning as a recreational activity, this genre has mainly been for the elite. With a mixture of harmony and impromptu, classical music is categorized into seven modes known as Dastgah. The lyrics for this celebrated genre are mainly classic Persian poetry, especially the works of Sufi poets like Hafez and Rumi.
Iranian Folk Music
The incredible cultural and ethnic diversity of Iran has enriched Iranian folk music with a beautiful variety. These precious resources of Iranian music are melodies and traditions that were born and developed by local people from different parts of the country. Each with their own style, mood, themes, and instruments, as well as influences from Iranian traditional music, the music of each region and ethnicity is unique and special. Historical, social, religious, romantic, and nostalgic themes, as well as lullabiers, children’s songs and songs for special occasions like weddings and harvests are among the themes.
Kurdish Music
As a branch of Iranian folk music, Kurdish Music of Kermanshah and Kurdistan is one of the most unique choices for Persian music tours. Kurdish music is mainly vocal and enjoys thematic diversity. Kurdish festive and lyrical music, often played by various instruments, includes a cheerful group dance. The mesmerizing mystic music of the Kurds, on the other hand, has an ancient origin and is accompanied by Kurdish Tanbur (string instrument) and Daf (percussion instrument). Music is sacred to some mystic Kurds and they play their sacred instruments in their solitude, gatherings, and ceremonies.

Bună dear Valeriu!
Thanks for the wonderful compliments, as an Iranian who is very interested in music, it’s awesome to see someone with the same passion so enamored with my people’s music. We at IranOnTour are firm believers in the power of arts and the amazing potential it has in bringing all kinds of people closer together, because as you said, we all share common roots, and art is an universal language so there are no barriers. One of the reasons that we’re so heavily invested in tours of cities that may be missing from other agencies packages (like Kermanshah), is that you can witness amazing folk traditions like music and dancing while totally immersed in their world.
At the moment, we are focused on inbound tours to Iran, so sadly we’re not offering persian music tours outside of Iran. But as the idea of Iranian music tours in other countries excite us very much and is the exact kind of tourism that we’re interested in, we will investigate the matter with some of our Iranian friends from europe who are in the music business to see if it’s possible. I’ll add your email to our list and we’ll notify you if everything goes well. In fact, the aforementioned friends do offer classical persian music concerts in europe, so hit us up if you want more info.
As you may know, a lot of Iranian musicians and bands are a part of the Iranian diaspora that lives in europe and northeren america, so hopefuly you can catch some of their performances in the meanwhile.
Also, awesome list of musicians! Congratulations on your impeccable taste, I suggest checking out Farhad Mehrad, Mehrpouya, and Viguen too. All legendary contemporary iranian musicians mixing pop, jazz, and rock. If you want something more modern, check out Kiosk (heavilly influenced by Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler) and King Raam (Alternative/Indie).
Hope you have a wonderful day, and thanks for the great suggestion.
