The Story of Sadri Garden
Sadri Garden was built by the order of one of the rulers of Zand era (1750 – 1795) in the late 18th century. Later, Namir and his Zoroastrian family lived as gardeners in the garden. After working in India and saving enough money, Namir returned to Taft, and bought the garden. That’s why people of Taft also call the place Namir Garden. Namir married a girl from Taft and had 11 children. The large family owned the house until the death of the only daughter of the family. Then the garden came into the hands of the municipality of Taft and Taft’s Cultural Heritage Organization.
Architecture of Sadri Garden
The main materials used in the construction of Sadri garden are adobe, brick, cobblestone, cut stone, thatch, wood, plaster and brick. The architecture and design of this building as well as the vegetation of this garden is a perfect example of a Persian garden. So that such a building is built with beautiful trees in the hot and scorching desert conditions.
Sadri House or Sadri Garden, like all old houses, has a summer residence and a winter residence. To see this building and garden, you should pass through a narrow alley. Upon entering the vestibule, you reach a stream. It was used as Khonkja, a cool place. By entering the garden, the first building that you encounter is the summer residence. This building has a large hall. There are wide corridors on both sides of the hall, which are the connection path between the rooms.
Summer residence mansion has a two-floor wind catcher that is located on the hall of the mansion. This wind catcher, which acts as an air conditioner, is the tallest wind catcher in Taft. Below the hall, you will see a basement. It’s made of bricks. In the interior part of the garden, there are 30 rooms. These rooms are made of adobe and mud. They were the residence of the peasants who worked for the lord.
In front of the summer residence, there is a large stone pool, passing through which you reach the winter residence. There is a water mill in the winter residence; A mill that once supplied flour for the household. Water flowed into the mill and the garden to feed and irrigate pomegranates, apricot and peach trees. You can still see the pool, the fountains, the trees and their fruits are still standing.
Decorations of Sadri Garden
As mentioned above, the summer residence has a large hall. Beautiful altar arches decorate this hall . The basement is made of black cement and brick, and the floor of this huge building is covered with bricks. There are stunning cylindrical pillars in the second floor of this building. The parts of the pillars that are connected to the roof are decorated with square and crescent-shaped bricks. In a part of the ceiling, a cover of wood and date fibers has been used instead of iron. Likewise, there are wonderful orosi (tall windows and colored glass) in the rooms of the house.
You can see an old manuscript in one of the rooms on the second floor of the hall. It is on the eastern front and inside the shelf that is in this room. This manuscript is more than 55 years old. And it is written by a person named Ata-ollah Mosnadi Nejad. He was transferred from Shiraz to Taft due to an administrative mission. He has written about his encounter and association with the people of Taft, especially the Zoroastrians of this city, with a pencil on the wall.
Sadri Garden – The Genius Irrigation System
There is a large stone pool in front of the porch of Namir Mansion, which plays an important role in softening the garden atmosphere. This pool has been designed and implemented with the special idea of the architects and according to the facilities of that time. It has 95 fountains. It is also interesting to know that the irrigation system and the use of water power in this garden has been very smart. So that the water of the fountains flows without electricity and pumping. It then flows throughout the garden to irrigate garden trees. Finally, the water that flows in the garden streams goes to the winter residence, where it runs the mill for purposes such as grinding wheat and grains.
The Charms of Sadri Garden
The summer residence mansion has now become a beautiful restaurant. You can have lunch and dinner inside the summer mansion or in the garden. You can sit around the beautiful pool and also enjoy the pleasant and fresh air of the garden. In winters, they install enclosures around the pool that allow you to sit in the garden, in front of the pool. That makes a marvelous atmosphere.
At night, the beauty of the light in both mansions and lights of the garden create a special atmosphere. The pool and its fountains are naturally supplied from mountain water. Water supply is due to the clever design of the slope of the water path to the garden. The entrance of the garden leads to a beautiful corridor. The corridor is decorated with pomegranate trees and old oil lamps hanging on the corridor wall.
In the two streets on both sides of the fountains, the narrow garden passages help create shade. Therefore, the shade of the trees covers the passage like an umbrella. And in hot summers of the desert they were like a paradise corridor. They protected family members from the heat when going around the garden.
The Museum – Sadri Garden
The “Garden Restoration” museum is in a part of the summer residence building. In this museum you can visit paintings from the garden before the restoration, the restoration process, the shape and image of the garden after the restoration and even several fountain stones of the old fountains of the garden. Observing the difficulties of the process of restoring every historical building for architects, builders and workers, will give us a new and special perspective about Persian architecture and more attention to details.
